100 Beste Plakate 23

This year’s 100 Beste Plakate sets the tone right away and follows through: each year, 100 Beste Plakate e. V. recognizes the strongest and most inventive poster work from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The related yearbook has become a go-to reference for designers and visual creators across the region, and this edition marks the first time it’s being published by Slanted Publishers.

The 2023 volume brings together all 100 selected posters from the 100 Beste Plakate 23 competition in generous, large-format reproductions, paired with notes on subject matter and the circumstances in which each piece was produced. It also takes a broader look at contemporary poster culture, tracing today’s visual currents and emerging directions. The publication is rounded out with an introduction from the jury by Toan Vu-Huu, a foreword by Fons Hickmann, an essay by Helene Roolf, a presentation of the jury, and a detailed contact and credits section for designers, clients, and printers.

Framed by the theme “X out of 100 / Expect Nothing—Appreciate Everything,” the book avoids any sense of hierarchy. Every entry receives the same treatment: each poster or series appears simply as one of the hundred chosen by the jury.
