X-Hocker by Herzog & de Meuron
The X-Hocker began as a research project at Herzog & de Meuron that explored the possibilities and limits of CNC precision cutting within traditional wood joinery. Sitting at the crossroads of analogue craft and digital fabrication, the design was later developed for a private home in Switzerland before making its public debut at the Pérez Art Museum in Miami.
Through many prototypes, forms, and variations, the project refined a simple idea: a pure wooden joint that appears effortless but is technically complex. The resulting stool is built from four CNC-cut wooden legs that interlock and cross at a single central knot, creating a precise, sculptural structure without unnecessary ornament.
