X-Rocker by Herzog & de Meuron

The X-Rocker reduces the idea of a rocking chair to its essential geometry: two curved wooden surfaces held by three interlocking legs. Cut with CNC precision, the legs meet at a central knot, forming an X-shaped structure that supports both sitting and movement.

The form began with the comfort of an inflatable gym ball, where the body is kept gently active through balance and motion. In the X-Rocker, that sphere is distilled into two interchangeable curves: one smooth, the other milled with grooves for a more tactile seat. Either side can be used for sitting, allowing the object to shift between stillness, rocking, and subtle movement.

Part of the X furniture family, the X-Rocker continues the research first developed in the X-Hocker. The series explores the point where digital fabrication meets traditional joinery, creating wooden connections that look direct and simple, but rely on carefully resolved complexity.
